Free school story: Tiger Primary School

Tiger Primary School, which opened in September 2012, is Kent’s first free school and Maidstone’s first new school for 25 years. This open learning space was part of the school’s vision to provide the right environment for the way they wanted students to learn.
The school uses an open space which provides the setting for two classes to be taught simultaneously to promote collaborative teaching and learning. Headteacher Emma Bryant explains: “Unlike traditional classrooms these spaces provide learning environments for two classes, which promotes collaborative learning and teaching. Plazas ensure continuity of delivery and opportunities for all children.”
Alongside the unusual indoor space, pupils also have access to a school farm and ecology woodland. These are not the only distinctive features of Tiger, the school also teaches Mandarin and has an extended day to offer more classes in music, sport, and the arts.
