Ofqual exceptional arrangements for exam grading and assessment in 2020

NSN has submitted a response to Ofqual's consultation on exam grading and assessment in 2020 due to coronavirus (COVID-19).

New Schools Network (NSN) is a charity improving the life chances of young people across the country by supporting the creation of new free schools. NSN finds talented people and organisations, supports them to establish new free schools in their communities and, through the Academy Ambassadors Programme, supports better governance by finding business leaders with the right skills to become trustees.

NSN welcomes the Ofqual consultation on creating exceptional arrangements during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Our response is limited to the specified proposal and is not a wider comment on the role of Ofqual.

With regard to statistical standardisation of centre assessment grades, NSN urges Ofqual to ensure free schools without historical data are not unfairly disadvantaged if by consequence this means results are revised downwards to average national expectations. While the consultation document acknowledges that statistical standardisation will need to accommodate centres without historical results, NSN recommends schools be given the opportunity to see final details of the model adopted, clearly setting out how they will be accommodated to ensure the aims of being objective and fair are met.
