NSN responds to housing white paper

Tuesday, February 7, 2017
Toby Young, Director of New Schools Network, gave this brief response to the housing white paper “Fixing our broken housing market".

"If the Government succeeds in its aim of creating between 225,000 and 275,000 new homes every year, we are going to need some new schools. The ambitious house-building programme is a great opportunity to get much-needed new schools built at no cost to the taxpayer. I’d like to see the planning process changed so developers find it easier to get planning consent if they’re proposing to build new schools alongside new houses.

"The pupil population is predicted to increase by 458,000 between now and 2020, and we need to see far more schools open to meet this demand. We need at least 750 new schools to cover this shortfall, and if we could incentivise developers to help meet this demand that would be a big win for the taxpayer.”
