Following the Government announcement on providing loans to new schools, NSN Director, Unity Howard said:
"NSN welcomes the Government scheme to provide loans for new schools in housing estates. Bridging the gap in funding from housing developers was a key part of our recommendations in Free schools: The next 10 years and we are delighted the Government has listened to our proposal.
"There is a significant gap between places being required and funding being made available. These loans will help schools to be built faster where they are really needed. As well as bridging this funding gap the Government should also step in and legislate to compel local authorities to release what is already publicly-owned land to new free school groups. Too often, local authorities are dragging their feet when it comes to releasing land for much-needed new schools that will benefit local families.
"This new scheme is a step in the right direction to help new schools secure sites and start out on the right foot. We look forward to seeing many new free schools secure sites and open their doors in permanent homes."
