NSN Director of Programmes: Vulnerable children lacking support cannot be justified

Wednesday, May 6, 2020
Responding to the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee’s report on Support for Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, NSN's Director of Programmes, Sophie Harrison Byrne, said:

"The Public Accounts Committee’s report on Support for Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities is concerning.

"The report highlights the difficulties many families face in securing an ECH plan, which too frequently leave our most vulnerable children lacking the support they need. This simply cannot be justified.

"The SEND system must be reformed, so that children with special educational needs and disabilities can reach their full potential. We must put an end to the postcode lottery in access to high quality support and education that all children deserve.

"To ease the pressure on the system, we want to see more special and alternative provision free schools opened across the country so that there are enough, local schools to meet the rising need for these pupils."
