NSN Director: Michael Gove MP right to say free schools policy needs “innovation and diversity."

NSN Director, Luke Tryl, said:

“We welcome The Rt Hon Michael Gove MP’s comments, which show the importance of committing to communities being at the heart of the free school policy.

"It is not wrong for schools to believe in certain approaches that work for their students, but the beauty of the free schools policy was, and is, that applicants can offer something different that will work in their community: whether it be project based learning at School 21 in East London, expeditionary learning at XP in Doncaster, or alternative provision at Harmonize AP Academy in Liverpool.

"We believe reinvigorating the policy by supporting more groups from within the community is essential to the long term success of free schools, which is why it is one of the seven recommendations in our new report Free schools: the next 10 years.”
