Unity Howard responds to the announcement that Leeds Maths School has been approved to open.
"It is fantastic news that another specialist maths free school will be opening, the first to do so in Yorkshire. The University of Leeds will join the likes of Kings College London, the University of Exeter and more recently the University of Liverpool to provide their world-class expertise to sixth-form students.
"King’s Maths School and Exeter Mathematics School have been truly transformative for young people in their communities. Both are recognised as top performing state 16-19 providers, with ‘well above average’ progress scores; at King’s, 90% of students achieve AAB or higher including at least two facilitating subjects, with 72% achieve the same at Exeter. The successes of these schools have only been possible because of the innovation and collaboration encouraged by the free schools programme.
"I hope this programme continues to go from strength to strength, so that every child in every region has the opportunity to benefit."
