NSN Deputy Director: Communities must have meaningful role in running of schools

Friday, June 28, 2019
NSN's Deputy Director, Unity Howard, responds to the National Governance Association report 'Moving MATs forward: the power of governance'.

"Schools have always been at the heart of community-life and must have a meaningful role in the running and oversight of schools. Multi-academy trusts have been a force for good, transforming education in schools that have been left behind for too long. New Schools Network welcomes this report and agrees that schools working together is most likely to be successful in groups with joint governance, such as multi-academy trusts.

"Next week New Schools Network celebrates 10 years of putting communities at the heart of schools, by supporting them in establishing new schools to introducing local business leaders to trust boards. The first step must be getting the right people around the table to govern effectively and our Academy Ambassadors programme has helped trusts to recruit over 1,300 people from business and the professions to trust boards."
