I spent part of last weekend at this year’s Northern Rocks conference. I’m not going to lie - I was slightly anxious in the build-up to going. I was invited in my role as Director of Parents and Teachers for Excellence (PTE), and knew that to some extent I would be a token ‘trad’, but I was blown away by the welcome I received and the great discussions I witnessed. We love a bit of number-crunching here at NSN, and Thursday’s pupil absence dataset contained some interesting news for free school advocates to ponder.

This is going to lead to great new schools being set up in the areas that desperately need them, and we look forward to helping them in this process."

It’s been just over a month since I took on the role of Interim Director at the New Schools Network. It was a real privilege to be asked to step in, and I was delighted to do so – not only am I passionate about free schools, but I’ve been involved with NSN in different ways since it was set up in 2009, most recently when pulling together an application to open a free school in Cambridgeshire.

The summer of 1988 - what a time to be alive! A booming economy. “Die Hard” at the cinema. The second “Summer of Love” and acid house. The Seoul Olympics.

And, of course, Kenneth Baker’s Education Reform Act.

As well as introducing a National Curriculum, it kick-started the move towards much greater frontline autonomy across the country.
