Isle of Wight: Plans for new primary school

A NEW primary school, established by a community group, could open on the Isle of Wight.

If approved by the Department for Education (DfE), the Sylvan School would open in September 2015, catering for reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children, with 14 pupils in each year group.

By 2019 the school, for which a final location has yet to be decided, would have a capacity of just 98 pupils.

The Sylvan School vision came from Alex and Jenna Sabine, who run the Playroom nursery in Ventnor. The group behind the project includes current and retired primary school teachers, as well as experts in child development and early years education.

Mr Sabine said: "We have had the idea for this school for about ten years now and since sharing the vision with others, we have been overwhelmed by the amount of support we have rapidly gained."

It is intended that children from across the Isle of Wight will be able to attend.

Mr Sabine said 120 children had been registered on the school’s website in just one month.
