An MP has given his backing to plans for a new free school in a town where secondary pupils face an hour and a half of commuting every day.
The School for Ongar campaign was launched last year by people living in and near the town, including the former manager of the Zinc Arts centre, Jeff Banks, with the aim of using the government’s free schools programme to set up a secondary school near the leisure centre in Fyfield Road.
Eric Pickles, MP for Ongar, who met members of the group on Friday during a meeting at the Ongar Adult Community College, said: “This is a strong group which includes not only parents and grandparents, but also experienced teachers, including senior managers from a number of outstanding secondary schools.
“With the development which has taken place in and around Ongar recently, there is a convincing argument in favour of a new school in the town which will serve the needs of the local population.”
