PLANS are being put in place to open Portsmouth’s first free school.

The John Pounds Free School aims to be the first in the city to be set up under the government’s free school initiative.

The new primary would take on a different approach to teaching through Philosophy for Children, which offers a way to open up learning through dialogue, enquiry and the exploration of ideas.

BOLTON’S first government flagship free school will open its doors in September.

The Olive Tree Primary School — a mixed sex Muslim school which will take non-Muslim children — will open in an existing empty building inHalliwell.

Free schools are part of a government plan to establish schools which are free from local authority control.

Hundreds of Free Schools Groups – set up by parents, teachers and local communities across the country – are today submitting applications to the Department for Education to set up new local schools that would open from September 2013.

New Schools Network (NSN) the independent charity which supports groups establishing Free Schools has welcomed the announcement by Barclays of a new range of services to help Free Schools and Academies improve education. Barclays and NSN will be working together to deliver elements of their support, in particular in areas of deprivation and those with a lack of good local school places.

NSN welcomes Free School announcements


New Schools Network (NSN) has welcomed the announcement that a further 55 new mainstream Free Schools have been approved to open in September 2012. There are a further 6 already due to open next year bringing the total number to 61.
