Set up a school – Model Application Form

Hundreds of groups have now got in contact with the Network looking to set up a school. They have asked for more detailed guidance on the information they need to collate.

We have designed a model application form to help those groups, and have also published a translated version of the Swedish application form.

This model application form is for anyone considering setting up a new school or wanting to obtain a better understanding of the work involved. While the application process set out in this document differs from that required by the DCSF when setting up a new school, it requires similar information.

Potential providers

This application form provides a checklist for potential providers to think about and decide before setting up a school. Anyone interested in setting up a new school ought to be able to answer the questions in this document well as part of a phased process. We believe that if they can they would be able to set up a successful and competent school with the potential to raise aspiration and transform attainment in their area.

Politicians, policy makers and civil servants

The New Schools Network believes we need more new schools from a wide range of providers. We also believe that any application system should be transparent, straightforward and clear - while requiring potential providers to demonstrate competence and thought. Politicians from all three parties have promoted the idea of more diversity and choice in school provision. We hope this will help them turn that promotion into reality.

We have been contacted by parents and teachers across the country who are enthusiastic about setting up a school. But we are also aware that the process can seem daunting. Please note that, under current legislation and guidance, an official application for a school is likely to be accepted only with the official help of organisations and individuals with an education track record. If you are interested, we will help you link with those groups.
