Growing Pains - Strategic planning for small and single academy trusts

New Schools Network is pleased to welcome New School Network specialist and Academy Ambassador regional adviser, Anne Casey, to explore strategic planning and trust growth for small and single academy free school trusts.

During the event we will hear from panel members on topics such as ‘planning for growth’, ‘setting your risk appetite’ and ‘increasing autonomy as the trust grows’. We are pleased to confirm our panel for the event:

Sarah Counter – Sarah is the CEO, Founder and Director of Canary Wharf College Trust. Since opening up Canary Wharf College, East Ferry in the first tranche of free schools in 2011, the trust have continued to expand steadily through the free school route. Canary Wharf College Trust now supports three free schools and continues to think strategically about the future.

Stephen Munday CBE – Stephen is the Chief Executive of The Cam Academy Trust, an 11 school trust based in Cambridgeshire. The trust supports both primary and secondary schools and pursued growth through academy conversion, sponsorship and the free school route. The trust communicates its purpose through a simple statement: to secure academic excellence for all.

Phil Wheeliker – Phil is the Chair of Trustees for South Pennine Academies, a trust which prides itself on strong partnerships with families, local businesses and community agencies. Formed in 2012 by a single academy converter, the trust has grown steadily since 2015. With two primary free schools, the board have considered a range of growth options including conversions and sponsorship.

Chris Drake – Chris is the Chair of Orbis Education Trust. The trust, established in 2011, operated as a single academy trust (Southfield School) until they were joined by Kingsthorpe College earlier this year. With recent experience of growth, and a further free school in pre-opening, Chris can share many key reflections on the process.

This event is aimed at free school trust CEOs and trustees. Whether you’re looking to grow now, in the future, or not at all, this event will provide an opportunity to hear lived experience and ask any questions you may have. This event will feature an optional networking session from 1.30-2.00pm.
