Become an academy sponsor

Boston Pioneers School in Lincoln has close links with two local primary schools
Academy sponsors are required throughout the country to support and improve underperforming schools of all kinds.

Sponsors are responsible for the performance and finances of the school, recruiting the head teacher, and selecting the governing body.

To apply to become a sponsor, you need to fill in the application provided by the DfE outlining a regional growth plan, evidence of financial expertise, information about your educational track record, and clear governance structures.

Getting your first school

If you are approved, there are still a number of steps that need to be taken before you can sponsor an academy. These include:

  • Setting out a school improvement plan
  • Getting ministerial approval
  • Agreeing legal issues with the LA regarding buildings and land
  • Signing a funding agreement
